Principals and teachers comment
Principals Comment
The class of 2010. Another cohort of children leaves Thorndon on the next stage of their educational journey. At this point it all starts to get a little more serious and the stakes become higher. By the time you reach the end of your secondary schooling the stakes may well have become higher still and how you achieve in NCEA may have a significant impact on what tertiary education you are able to engage in.
The transition to secondary school is a big step and after being ‘in charge’ of the school you will suddenly become the little kids again. Take your time to find out how things work at your new school and take advantage of all the opportunities that will be available to you. Ask the questions you need to ask and make your voices heard.
If there is a message for you all it is – and what else would a principal say – work hard. Work hard, find out what it is that you are really, really, really interested in doing and commit to it. While you are working hard don’t forget to have fun. Hard work, learning and fun can go together and hard work in whatever field often leads to success.
You are a group which has challenged us from time to time and, I hope, has been challenged by us. You have a great deal of talent, some of it in the academic area, some in the arts, some in design, some in sport, some in other areas, and you all have the capacity to achieve. We look forward to hearing about these achievements.
There is always an open invitation to you to come back and share your successes with us and we hope that you will do this, not just next year but in years to come. Thorndon School is part of you and each of you will stay part of Thorndon School.

Hi there,
I’ve had some great times with you guys, from teaching you for years in the Extension and Enrichment group, to teaching you in class for the last two times. I remember a lot of you from when you were five, you were so cute back then…
You always amaze me at your abilities to laugh! You’ve got great senses of humour, great abilities to laugh at yourselves and to laugh at each other. It’s also great to see a year group who includes everyone in their fun, no matter who they are. Well done to you!
You guys are a talented bunch, from sports to arts to design to leaders. You’re going to do amazing things with your lives – just remember your teachers of Thorndon School when you do! And that remember, that above all, it’s people, people, people who matter! Your whanau, your friends, your techers and all other people who play a role in your lives – no matter how big or small.
Take care. I wish you guys all the successes in the world – at school and beyond. I hope your wishes and dreams are fulfilled and that you live safe and happy lives.

Moving onto college is a big transition in your formal education! It is an exciting time to make new friends, learn new things and become more responsible for your own learning and future. I encourage you to make the most of all opportunities that college offers and be involved in as many sports and groups as you can. (Even if your horse is broken! Keep persevering!)
Thorndon school has aimed to create responsible, creative thinkers and learners and I would say that the majority of you have learned these attributes, reflect on things we have taught you and put it in to practice.
The lovely thing about this group of year eights is that you are all one big group of friends which is not typical of previous year eights. You have a lot of fun together and are a lively bunch! I love the way you all yell out ‘Hi Ms Brown’ every time I walk through the play ground and you always seem so happy. I know you will be nervous moving onto college especially if you are going to one that your friends are not going to, Kia Kaha, be strong, Kia Maia, be brave, Kia Manawanui, be patient.
You are lucky to have been born in a digital/social networking where it will be easy to keep in touch with all your Thorndon friends. Many of you have been here since you were five and have developed life long friendships that you will value and treasure for the rest of your life.
I hope to see many of you visit next year and tell us about your successes and college life. I won’t be able to spy on Olive or embarrass her at school during sex ed but I hope to stay in contact and see many of you in the future!

Dear Year 8’s…
We have enjoyed our time with you so much and it is going to be a big loss for us. You guys are soooo awesome and are the best year 8’s ever (apart from us next year)! You are so talented and we are sure you will be successful in whatever you choose to do. We hope you have fun on your journeys and don’t forget to invite us to school reunions if you have any.

Comment: This year has been an awesome year! I have been at this school since I was five and my time at Thorndon has been a heap of fun. I have learnt so much and have made so many great friends here. I have had an epic time at Thorndon and I will be sad to leave but I can’t wait till next year. BYE THORNDON!!
Funny moment: One time me and Logan were running around tagging people randomly and I walked over to someone with Logan and she tagged him and so I tried to tag him and he shouted “Don’t tag me” and I screamed because he gave me such a fright and his skateboard went forward fast and he fell off and me and Logan cracked up laughing and he started shouting at us.

Comment: My last seven years at Thorndon have been great – this year especially. I am really looking forward to going to college next year but I am going to miss all my friends heaps. Thorndon has been awesome and I’m going to miss it heaps.
